MVE edges Lady ’Dawgs in overtime

Mount Vernon-Enola point guard Katherine Bartley sank four of her six three-pointers in the fourth quarter as the Lady Warhawks forged a tie and outscored Quitman 12-8 in overtime to pull out a 64-60 victory in front of a packed house Thursday night in Quitman.
MVE outscored Quitman 16-15 in the first quarter behind a pair of three’s from Bartley and forward Sydney Davies. Slashing guard Heather Prowse added four points in the first quarter for the Lady Warhawks, while Quitman stayed in the game with the help of six points from guard Tori Ivy, five from forward Roseanna Ezell and four from post player Caitlin Haley.
The Lady Bulldogs then outscored MVE 8-7 in a defensive-laden second period. With MVE leading 23-21 after Davies found Prowse cutting baseline for a basket, Quitman point guard Taylor Bennett recorded a rebound bucket, tying the score at 23-all at halftime.
MVE took a 31-26 lead in the third quarter when Davies drained a three-pointer from left wing but Quitman retaliated with six straight, including a three-pointer from right wing by Ivy and bucket in the paint from Haley off an assist by Bennett.
With Quitman leading 31-30, Davies popped a three-pointer from top of the key but Quitman combo guard Alex Bohannan fired back with a trey from left elbow. After Prowse and Ezell traded a pair of free throws, Haley added two more from the line for the Lady Bulldogs, giving Quitman a 39-36 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
Prowse turned a steal into a pair of free throws early in the fourth but Bennett and Haley each made two from the line for Quitman, pushing its lead to five.
Following a free throw from MVE guard Shanna Smith, Bohannan made a free throw and Bennett hit two more from the line, giving the Lady Bulldogs a 46-39 lead with 4:22 remaining.
MVE began its comeback when Bartley ripped a three-pointer from right wing off an assist from Smith then post player Hayley Brewer came up with a steal that led to another trey by Bartley, this time from left elbow as the Lady Warhawks suddenly pulled within one.
Ivy slashed into the lane and dished to Ezell for an uncontested layup but Bartley quickly fired back with a three-pointer, tying the game at 48-all with 2:33 left in regulation.
Quitman regained the lead with a pair of free throws from Ezell but Brewer turned an offensive rebound into a free throw.
With under a minute to play, Haley extended Quitman’s lead to 51-49 with a free throw but Bartley drilled a deep three-pointer from left wing. Trailing by one with 20 seconds left, Ezell drove the lane and drew contact. Ezell made 1-of-2 from the stripe and the Lady Bulldogs held on the defensive end, leaving the game tied at 52-all entering a four-minute overtime period.
Smith ripped a three-pointer off an assist from Prowse on MVE’s first possession in overtime but Haley answered with a trey. Prowse then popped a three-pointer from top of they key before Ivy made two from the stripe.
Prowse scored inside off an assist from Bartley as MVE pushed its lead back to three before Quitman reserve post player Shayna Burklow dropped one from the line.
