Mount Vernon-Enola jumped out to a 16-9 halftime lead behind 10 points from Ashlynn Ellis and Katie Brewer took over in the second half with eight points as the Jr. Lady Warhawks beat Quitman 30-21 on Thursday in Quitman.
MVE took the lead on the game’s first possession when Ellis buried a midrange jumper from left baseline but Maddie Holland responded with a bucket in the paint for Quitman.
MVE ran off four straight, including a three-pointer from right wing by Ellis but Marissa McPeake answered with a trey from right wing, cutting the Jr. Lady Warhawks’ lead to 6-5.
In the closing seconds of the first quarter, Jaycie Sullivan drained a three-pointer from right elbow, extending MVE’s lead to four entering the second quarter.
Holland recorded a putback early in the second but the Jr. Lady Warhawks used a 7-0 run to take control, starting when Ellis sank a 10-foot jumper from left side. Ellis also completed MVE’s run with a three-pointer from right wing as the Jr. Lady Warhawks’ lead grew to 16-7 before Madison Bridges got a stick back, giving Quitman a little momentum at intermission.
But, that momentum didn’t carry over to the second half as Sullivan picked a steal and scored then Brewer scored off a rebound. Brittney Parker responded with an 18-foot jumper from right wing but MVE scored the next six, including four from Brewer as MVE suddenly pushed its lead to 26-11.
In the final minute of the third period, McPeake ripped a three-pointer up top, trimming Quitman’s deficit to 26-14 entering the final six minutes of play.
The Jr. Lady Bulldogs outscored MVE 7-4 in the fourth quarter as Lanna Goff and Kaylee Freeman each contributed a bucket and Bridges added one from the line before Daphnee Patrom turned a steal into a pair of free throws, setting the final at 30-21.
Ellis led MVE with 10 points and Brewer added eight. McPeake paced Quitman with six points and Holland tallied four.
