Jr. Bulldogs slow down Martin, rally for victory

Once Quitman figured out a way to slow down Mount Vernon-Enola power forward Newly Martin, the Junior Bulldogs also came alive on the offensive end and rallied from a nine-point halftime deficit for a 38-30 victory.
A big part of slowing Martin came with the aid of Quitman center Larry Pool, who made his his presence felt defensively in the second half, clogging up the paint as the Jr. Bulldogs began to heat up from the field.
MVE took the game’s first lead on a three-pointer from right wing by Trey Burrows but Quitman responded with four in a row, including a three-pointer from right corner by Walker Johnson.
MVE jumped back in front when Martin hit a turnaround bank shot from left side but Johnson slashed into the lane and dropped a scoop shot. After Keaton McEntire answered with a bucket in transition for the Jr. Warhawks, Quitman scored five straight, starting with a driving layup by Treavor Williams.
DJ McVay then tracked down a steal for a layup and Johnson sank a free throw as Quitman pushed its lead to four but Martin hit a turnaround bank shot from left side, leaving the Jr. Bulldogs with a 11-9 advantage entering the second quarter.
Martin opened the second with a bucket from left block but Williams ripped a three-pointer in transition off an assist from McVay.
With Quitman leading 14-11, the Jr. Warhawks closed the first half with a 12-0 run, ignited by Martin, who scored five straight. McEntire added a free throw, William Higginbothom hit two more from the line and Burrows popped a three-pointer from right wing as MVE pushed its lead to eight and expanded upon it with another free throw as the Jr. Warhawks took a 23-14 lead to intermission.
McEntire made a free throw early in the third quarter but Quitman responded with a 5-0 spurt as Johnson drilled a three-pointer from right wing and Trey McGhee sliced into the lane for a layup in heavy traffic.
MVE briefly halted Quitman’s run with a free throw from Higginbothom but Pool scored from right block off an assist from Johnson and moments later McGhee scored inside off an assist from Williams, cutting MVE’s lead to 25-23 with 1:33 left in the third quarter.
Following a timeout, Martin scored from left block off an assist from Burrows before Quitman tied the score as Johnson scored four straight, including a three-pointer from left corner in transition, leaving the game knotted at 27-all going into the fourth quarter.
The Jr. Bulldogs dominated the final six minutes of play as Pool hit a fade away shot from left side then McGhee and Johnson each scored in transition as Quitman built a 33-27 lead midway through the fourth quarter.
MVE eventually responded with a pull up bank shot by McEntire but Williams countered with a 19-foot jumper from right corner. During the final two minutes, McEntire and McGhee traded free throws then McGhee added two more from the line in the closing seconds as Quitman claimed a 38-30 victory.
Martin led MVE with 13 points – all but two in the first half, while McEntire followed with seven and Burrows had six. Johnson scored a game-high 15 points for Quitman, McGhee added nine and Williams finished with seven.
