John Willard Reaves passed away February 5, 2018
John Willard Reaves of Edgemont, Arkansas departed this life on Monday the 5th of February 2018 . He was 81 years of age. Mr. Reaves was born December 7, 1936 to Willard Thomas Reaves and Vida Mae (Wade) Reaves. He married the love of his life, Barbara Ann Shirley, on February 17,1960. They were blessed to spend nearly 58 cherished, loving and wonderful years together.
Mr. Reaves, as a teen, surrendered his life to the Lord at First Baptist Church in Newport, Arkansas. He was a 1954 graduate of Newport High School. There he was very involved in his scholastic pursuits but his love for athletics especially The Newport Greyhound Football Team emphasized his time there. Following high school Mr. Reaves attended Arkansas State University in Jonesboro. He later joined the Arkansas National Guard before becoming a member of the United States Army. While stationed in El Paso, Texas Mr. Reaves was trained in missile launching and reported for duty in Okinawa, Japan where he received a ranking as Sergeant of the Niki Missile Battalion. He also received many other honors for his time served.
As a young boy, Mr. Reaves enjoyed hunting, fishing, and working in a variety of businesses with his dad. The lessons learned from his dad continued throughout his life as he became a successful retail Grocery Store(s) owner/operator along with his wife Barbara. Together they retired successfully after 35 years. He served on the advertising board for Rands IGA Wholesale of Arkansas. He was distinguished by his ability to prosper throughout his long years spent in operation of businesses and management of acquired assets. He was a quiet and humble man but also a strong and loving leader at home and in his work.
Mr. Reaves was a member of Westside Baptist Church of Greers Ferry, Arkansas. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Barbara; one son, John Reaves, Jr., and wife, Cheryl, of El Paso, Arkansas; one daughter, Terri Reaves Prislovsky and husband, Morris, of Greers Ferry; six grandchildren, Andrea Walker and husband, Matt, Garrett Prislovsky and wife, Mackenzie, Michael Prislovsky, Cody Reaves, Ellie Reaves, and Will Reaves; one great-granddaughter, Lillian Walker; and a lifetime of friends.
Friends may visit at Lone Star Baptist Church at Greer’s Ferry, Friday evening, 5:00-7:00 p.m. Funeral services are 1:00 p.m. Saturday at Lone Star Baptist Church.
Interment will follow at Walnut Grove Cemetery in Newport, Arkansas, at 4:00 p.m. Saturday. The family invites any Newport friends who are able to attend the graveside service.
Those honored to serve as pallbearers are John Reaves, Jr., Morris Prislovsky, Garrett Prislovsky, Michael Prislovsky, Cody Reaves, and Will Reaves.
