The sign in front of a Baptist church in my neighborhood asked the question, “Do you really want your children to grow up to be like you?”

Two weeks ago, Sarah Palin, conservative America’s sweetheart, asked the Tea Party’s national convention in her patented cutesy-sarcastic manner: “How’s that hopey-changey stuff workin’ out for ya?” Only Palin could make hope for a better America and change from the fear-based, war-mongering policies of George W. Bush into a joke. Cute but feeble jokes are Palin’s substitute for substance.

With all the concerns about health and healthcare, we seem to have little of it.

Some time ago a western movie portrayed a bunch of outlaws who botched up every attempt to pilfer money. They were known as the “Gang That Couldn’t Shoot Straight”.

There have been many books written about the King of Rock and Roll before and after his death. I have yet to find one that not only talks about what he did but what he was like when the spotlight is turned off.

When we lived in the North, snow was a very common occurrence in the winter. We participated in many of the winter sports.

President Obama jumped into the lion’s den last week to speak to the Congressional Republican Caucus, and when he had finished, subjecting himself to their questions. This was done on national television, and made for interesting viewing. It was a calculated risk for Obama, but it paid off for him in terms of public reaction.

There are many causes of grief. I believe the worse that I could imagine would be the loss of a very close family member.

Computers can be a blessing or a curse, depending on how they are used. What do they have to do with your health? They can have a significant impact if you are willing to learn and explore new ideas.

For several years we have listened to reports on the polar bear that were designed to tug at your heartstrings. If we don’t do something about global warming all those cuddly bears will disappear.
On the way to the melting ice-caps a funny thing happened – the number of polar bears exploded to five times the amount some 40 years earlier.

Arkansas’ senior U.S. Senator, Blanche Lincoln, is the new-age model of a poor little rich girl.
She is a two-term Democratic Senator subject to reelection this November to one of the most prized and coveted offices in the country. She is the newly-named chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee in a largely agricultural state. She has tried to please everybody, to the point of appearing not to be decisive or willing to take a stand about anything.

Last week’s Sun-Times ran a blistering front page article from the American Lung Association in which they called the tobacco industry “racketeers”. That may well be, but when compared to some other industries, the tobacco people look almost saintly.

Last week we were treated to a diatribe on the failings of The Supreme Court, partisan Republicans, big bad banks, unfaithful Democrats and a host of others that caused 2009 to be a year to forget.
