I am a Certified Diet Wellness Coach that teaches people how to counteract Diabesity. The program I teach was originally designed to solve blood sugar problems, now it is available for people who would also like to control their body composition or fat-to-lean ratio along with their health.
OK –But what is Diabesity-Exactly?
Diabesity was first coined by Shape Up America, working on the problem of obesity and type 2 diabetes, especially with children.
What it is——is this: Diabetes, obesity, insulin resistance, and metabolic syndrome are really all the same problem which we are now newly calling
Diabesity.
It is the condition of metabolic imbalance and disease that ranges all the way from mild blood sugar imbalance to full-blown type 2 diabetes.  So it goes from a fairly mild health issue to a severe one.
Whether you’ve got a little extra weight around the middle or have been diagnosed with insulin resistance or even type 2 diabetes, the fundamental underlying biological causes of ALL of these conditions are the same.
Unfortunately, Diabesity is becoming a global epidemic!
It leads to ill health and premature death. And it is not a fun journey.  Just ask anyone on it.
Consider the data from Europe alone: In Europe, approximately 33 million adults will be suffering from diabetes by 2010, (this year) and obesity, which is a major recognized risk factor for type-2 diabetes, is itself rapidly increasing in prevalence resulting in a diabesity epidemic. The current cost of type-2 diabetes in the European Union is 15 billion Euros per year….”
For us here in the United States, let’s hear from Medscape:  At least one third of Americans have been unsuccessful at maintaining their weights within healthy ranges.( Other material says it is over 2/3 of our population)[1] Obesity is a major risk factor for type 2 diabetes, and it is estimated that more than 20 million Americans are currently diabetic, one third of whom do not realize they have the disease.[2] Because obesity and diabetes often go hand in hand, a new term has been coined to describe America’s current healthcare crisis: “the diabesity epidemic.[3]”
What is the Connection between Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes?
Carrying excess fat around the abdomen leads to increased fat in the liver, causing insulin resistance.
That is why medical authorities now believe that a person’s Body Mass Index (BMI) can help predict whether or not a person will develop type 2 diabetes.
What causes Diabesity?
Simply stated these diseases are really the result of our nutritional choices, our lack of activity/exercise and exposure to toxins in our daily lives. In other words, they are highly preventable with proper lifestyle choices.
Which is why, if you are taking that journey- action needs to be taken-and quickly.
What can I do you might ask?  Do research, take a class with someone trained in this and learn how to counteract your journey down that road called Diabesity.  Also, you can take a basic cooking class from our own knowledgeable Janice Norris-beginning in April.
