The Concord Pirates golf team finished runner-up in the Class 1A State Tournament at New Haven Golf Course in Texarkana Friday afternoon to the Izard County Cougars, as Concord senior Ryan Brock finished with a round of 79 to earn overall medalist honors and lock up a spot in next Thursday’s Overall Tournament in Little Rock.
Concord finished with a team total of 279, sixteen strokes behind Izard County, who finished with a total of 263. Senior Hunter Hartwick carded a 98 and classmate Brooks Benton totaled a 102 to round out the scoring for the Pirates. Riley Cornett ended the day with a 109. Tyler Pemberton led the Cougars with an 81, followed by Matthew Workman’s 90 and Zach Williams’ 92. Pemberton finished two strokes behind Brock to earn medalist runner-up. The Bay Yellowjackets took home third with a 297, followed by tournament host Trinity Christian clinching fourth place with a 301, and Mt. Vernon-Enola rounded out the top five with a 306.
The Cougars (2010, 2011, 2017) and Pirates (2012, 2014, 2015, 2016) have both been dominant since the turn of the decade, responsible for winning all but one of the eight possible state titles, as Ouachita won in 2013. Concord has finished in the top two every season since 2011, having three overall medalists along the way (Luke Cornett: 2012, Jacob Webb: 2016, Ryan Brock: 2017). The Pirates also became the first Class 1A school in state history to win three consecutive state championships after edging the Cougars 254-255 last season at Turkey Mountain Golf Course in Horseshoe Bend. All team members were seniors, including Weston Pate, who started playing golf last year.
