The Pangburn Lady Tigers, Concord Pirates and both West Side basketball teams returned home Wednesday night winners in the semifinals of the Midland Invitational Tournament in Pleasant Plains, as the Lady Tigers mauled Palestine-Wheatley 63-32, the Pirates sailed past the Tigers 65-54, the Lady Eagles extinguished the Lady Pirates 64-52 and the Eagles struck down Des Arc 69-38.
Pangburn Lady Tigers-63 Palestine-Wheatley-32
Leading 17-7 after the first session of play, the Lady Tigers turned the jets on in the second quarter by reeling off a 20-4 run before coasting the rest of the way in an easy 64-32 decision over the Lady Patriots to improve to 10-6 and clinch a spot in last night's championship game. Pangburn's senior duo of Macie Hopkins (15) and Bailey Sagers (12) combined for 27 points in the win, as junior Maddie Wallace chipped in with 10.
Concord Pirates-65 Pangburn Tigers-54
Junior big man Hunter Spinks pumped in a game-high 23 points for the Pirates in the team's 65-54 triumph over Pangburn, dominating down low from the tipoff. The brother tandem of sophomore Braxton (14) and junior Bryar (12) combined for 26 to add to Concord's total, while Zach Sartain contributed with eight off the bench. Pangburn senior Alex Langley led the Tigers with 16, also getting help from sophomore Luke Rolland's 15. The Pirates advanced to the finals of the tournament for the second straight season after winning the title over Midland in 2017.
West Side Lady Eagles-64 Concord Lady Pirates-52
Coming off a 1A-5 conference loss to rival Concord the previous night, the Lady Eagles avenged themselves with a 64-52 win over the Lady Pirates, as juniors Madison Bailey and Alex Southerland led the way with 17 points apiece. Senior Kaitlin Towell, known well for her outside shooting, racked four layups and one three pointer to finish with 11 for 12-2 West Side. Freshman Sarah Carlton provided big minutes in her outing, knocking down three shots from beyond the arc for 9 points. The Lady Pirates (10-4) were guided by junior guard Avery Southerland's 24, 12 of which came from trifectas. Classmate and forward Ashlyn Deckard added 10.
West Side Eagles-69 Des Arc-38
The Eagles secured the sweep while punching their ticket to the championship game against Concord after mercy-ruling Des Arc 69-38 in a battle of Eagle teams, getting out to a 27-10 advantage and never looking back. The Twin Towers duo of freshmen Travis Gentry and Brenton Knapp scored 19 and 18, respectively, with Nate Bittle also hitting for double figures with 11. The Keith Brown-led squad improved to 10-6, collecting their seventh win in eight games in the process.
Last night present much action for Sun-Times area schools after West Side and Pangburn dueled in the senior girls title game, followed by West Side and Concord facing off for the second time this week in the boys trophy contest. Stay tuned for more coverage of both games in Wednesday's edition. For the Lady Tigers and Lady Eagles, it was the first matchup between the two for the 2018-19 campaign. The same could not be said for the Eagles and Pirates, who duked it out in Concord Tuesday night with the home team coming out on top 54-45.
