Heber Springs, Quitman, Cave City and Mountain View came to Panther Stadium Tuesday to work on their passing skills.
The Panthers’ Red team won games over Quitman (12-0) and Mountain View (31-6) but fell to Cave City (14-13).
In the Heber-Quitman match-up, the Panthers struck for a touchdown near the 17:00 mark as quarterback Wes McMullen found Hunter Derrick on a flag route for 25 yards and a first down.
McMullen lobbed to Derrick in the back right corner of the end zone for a touchdown but Quitman broke up the two-point conversion, leaving the Panthers with a 6-0 advantage.
Both teams struggled to find consistency on offense until Quitman quarterback Aaron Parker hit Lance Fires down the left seam for 30 yards. But the Bulldogs’ drive stalled out and Heber tacked on another score just before time expired.
McMullen found David Darrell on a short pass over the middle and he scatted into the end zone for a 40-yard touchdown that set the final at 12-0 after the Panthers’ two-point conversion fell incomplete.
Heber faced Cave City, who recently welcomed Newport transfer Thamail Morgan to their team and he made an impact with a 3-yard touchdown catch that gave the Cavemen a 6-0 lead. Heber broke up the conversion attempt then responded with a touchdown drive.
McMullen lobbed to Derrick in heavy traffic and he pulled down the reception for 38 yards then McMullen hooked up with Derrick again, this time for a 2-yard touchdown with 14:40 left to play. McMullen found Darrell in the front, right corner of the end zone for a one-point conversion, which gave Heber a 7-6 lead.
Cave City responded with a 5-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Dalton Carpenter to receiver Tyler Engleman and Carpenter hit Oscar Calderon for a two-point conversion as the Cavemen took a 14-7 lead.
With less than two minutes left, McMullen found Will Gilbrech on a flag route for 30 yards then he hit Derrick for a 10-yard touchdown in the final seconds. The Panthers went for the win rather than a tie but the two-point conversion was deflected in the end zone.
Heber’s Gray team gave the Red team a battle in the next game but the Red struck first as McMullen hit Gilbrech on a post for a 40-yard touchdown. Dalton Darrell intercepted the ensuing two-point conversion, leaving the Red with a 6-2 lead.
Gray quarterback Landon Glover led his unit down the field with a 15-yard hitch to Geoffrey Anderson then Luke Fair made two more receptions that set up a 2-yard touchdown catch by Tyler Helms. The one-point conversion was broken up, leaving the Gray in front, 8-6.
Gilbrech hauled in a 29-yard reception from McMullen to set up the Red team and Darrell capped the drive with a 3-yard touchdown reception. The two-point conversion fell incomplete, leaving the Red team with a 12-8 lead.
Fair picked off a pass that pulled the Gray team within two but McMullen and Derrick hooked up two more times in the final minutes with the second going for a 12-yard touchdown that gave the Red team an 18-10 victory.
The Panthers’ Red team jumped all over Mountain View from the start and never let up. Joey White and Derrick each hauled in a 3-yard touchdown from McMullen on Heber’s first two drives while Derrick also recorded an interception and Glibrech caught a two-point conversion.
Kaleb Lacy added an interception that gave Heber an 18-0 lead then White caught a 7-yard touchdown that was set up by two Darrell receptions. McMullen found Derrick on the one-point conversion as Heber built a 25-0 lead before Mountain View scored on a long touchdown pass down the right sideline. But McMullen hit Derrick for one more touchdown as time expired, giving the Panthers a 31-6 victory.
More 7-on-7 action is coming to Panther Stadium on Tuesday.
