The T-Ball season concluded with a six-team tournament at the Heber Springs City Fields. In the first round of play the Sand Knats, coached by Dan McElhaney, defeated the Mets led by Dr. Chris Tate. In the other first round game, the Bulls coached by Brooke Bise, defeated the Lugnuts coached by Jesse Hill. The second round pitted the Sidewinders coached by Jason Faughn against the Sand Knats. The Sand Knats prevailed and moved into the finals. On the other side of the bracket, the Rockhounds coached by Tina Barnes, were defeated by the Bulls. In the consolation game the Rockhounds were victorious against the Sidewinders to claim third place. The championship matchup pitted the Bulls against the Sand Knats. In a spirited, competitive contest the Bulls prevailed to claim the 2009 T-Ball title.
8-U Boys
This seasons 8 and under boys league consisted of five teams. The Diamondbacks coached by Eric Decker, the Giants coached by Becky Vines, the Rockies coached by Danny Sanders and Josh Miller, the Dodgers coached by Kathy Larios, and the Astros coached by Doug Cheney. The regular season was won by the Astros with an undefeated record. In tournament action the Diamonbacks won game one by defeating the Giants while the Dodgers were victorious against the Rockies. The Diamondbacks advanced to play the Astros and lost in a close game. This set the stage for the final where the top two teams from league play faced off for the championship. The 12-0 Astros versus the 8-4 Dodgers. In a great game that was a display of defense and timely hitting the Astros prevailed for the title.
10-U Boys
There were four 10 and under teams in the city leagues this year. They consisted of the A's coached by Pete Payton, the Angels coached by Marshall Farrell, the Mariners coached by Jeff Kelley, and the Rangers coached by Jamey Jenkins. It was a very competitive league that showcased some excellent talent sure to help Heber Springs be a force in years to come. The tournament commenced with the A's defeating the Mariners to move into the finals. Game 2 was a match-up between the Rangers and the Angels. The Angels won and moved into the finals. The finals was a rematch of two very good teams. The Angels were 12-0 for the league season and the A's were in second place with a 7-5 record. So, it was no small wonder that the finals went down to the last pitch. The Angels scored six runs in the bottom of the final inning and won 9-8. It was one of those games where you hate to see either team lose. Two well coached teams playing as hard as they can.
12-U softball
The Heber Springs Storm 12 and under girls softball tearn, coached by Trey Miller and Clay Fires, continued their winnings ways by sweeping through the district tournament to claim the championship. With this victory the Storm now has a 35-2 season record.
The tournament began with a heartbreaking defeat to the Bald Knob Bombers, 3-2.
This defeat put the Storm in the losers bracket which meant they would have to play multiple games to reach the finals.
On Saturday, June 6 the day began at 9 a.m. for the Storm as they won by forfeit versus White County Central. At 10:15 they defeated the Cabot Heat, 12-2.
At 12:45 they played the Heber Springs Cyclones. This is another excellent team from Heber Springs, coached by Buster Crowder and Mark Rezanka. The Storm came from behind to win 2-1.
At 3:15 the Storm beat the Lonoke Lightning 7-1. At 4:30 it was the Bald Knob Bombers team that had beaten them on Friday night.
It was payback time now as the Storm won 5-2 to gain a spot in the finals against a strong Jacksonville Lightning team.
Since the Storm was coming out of the losers bracket they would have to beat the Lightning two times to claim the title.
At the 5:45 game they began just that feat with a nail-biting 2-1 win.
The finals were no less suspenseful with the Storm prevailing 4-3 with a play at the plate to record the final out.
The final tally read, Heber Springs Storm, district champs.
14-U softball
The Heber Springs 14-U Shockwaves were a little nervous going into District play with only playing three games during the season due to the rain.
But it didn't take them long to come together as a team to make Heber Springs known.
The girls defeated the Maumelle Diamonds for the first win with a score of 5-4, which placed them against Quitman, a team with an high school All-State pitcher. Makayla Ramer hit a line-drive up the middle getting a double then Sydney Reed came up with a walk. Devrie Attendorn hit a homerun to right field which made the score 3-0 in the first inning.
The girls played tough defense and only allowed Quitman to score one run in the 4th inning, making the final score 7-1. Shockwaves then faced Rose Bud’s Rampage and both teams were ready to play.
The game remained scoreless until the last inning when Jamie Redinger laid down a perfect bunt which put her on base. Ramer was walked and both girls stole bases to score and to make the final score 2-0.
By defeating the Rampage this put Heber in the finals, where Rose Bud would work their way up back to the finals to face Heber’s Shockwaves once again. Heber Shockwaves jumped out on top when Attendorn hit a triple and then stole home making the score 1-0. Rose Bud came out hitting the ball, scoring two runs.
With girls on the bases a hard shot was hit at Attendorn on third and she threw to home plate to Courtney Reed to make the tag, ending the inning 2-1 Rose Bud. Kirnberly Knight hit to a grounder to shortstop but was just short of being safe at first then Redinger took a walk putting her on base when Ramer hammered a hard shot to left field which scored Redinger. S. Reed hit a bunt but was thrown out and as Ramer tried to steal home she is stopped at home plate ending the inning 2-2.
Brooke from Rose Bud came up and hit one to dead center but it was caught by Redinger. Misty Newcomb took a walk and stole second and third base. S. Reed struck out Kendall Harlen making the second out. The next batter hit to shortstop where she is thrown out to make the third out, ending the third inning with a score of 2-2
At the top of the fourth inning Courtney Reed came up and took a walk! When up to bat Goodwin’s hit to left field scored Reed. Rose Bud tightened up the defense and ended the inning with a score now 3- 2, Heber.
Heber played tough defense which kept the Rampage scoreless in the bottom of the fourth inning , leaving the score 3-2.
Ramer hit a single and then stole second then S. Reed hit a bunt, putting Ramer on third, but she was thrown out. Attendorn was walked, with a girl on third and first. G. Reed’s line-drive up the middle scored Ramer which made the score 4-2. Goodwin and Hill popped up to first, which ended the inning. With time expired and Rose Bud and trailing 4-2 the Heber Springs had to hold them to take the win. After a team huddle at the pitchers mound, Ramer came into pitch.
Pitching strikes she struck out the first batter then second hitter Alyssa comes up and hits to S. Reed at second where she throws her out at first.
Ramer then strikes out the third batter, ending the game with a score of 4-2, making the Heber Springs 14-U Shockwaves the undefeated District Champions.
