Quitman, Ark. -

Once an afternoon thunderstorm subsided, the Rose Bud Raptors erupted for 12 hits through four innings en route to a 19-5 victory over Pangburn in the 12-under district finals Tuesday at the Quitman Sports Complex.

Pangburn had to beat Rose Bud twice to claim the championship, but the Raptors sent an early message with five runs on four hits in the top of the first inning.

Facing Pangburn starting pitcher Grant Holeyfield, Andrew Adcock led off the game with a single to right field and Dylan Moore’s groundout to Mitchell Betts at first advanced Adcock around to third.

Tyler Weatherly worked a full-count walk and stole second then Blaed Matthews slammed a 2 RBI triple to deep center field that plated Adcock and Weatherly, giving Rose Bud a 2-0 lead.

Caleb Farren followed with an RBI single up the middle that scored Mathews but Newly Martin popped out to Betts at first before Blake Farrell reached on an error that scored Farren.

Leading 4-0, Francisco Charqueno roped an RBI double down the left field line that plated Farrell before Holeyfield got out of the jam when Skyler Baker bunted back to the mound and Holeyfield flipped to Mac Myers at the plate to cut down Charqueno.

In the bottom of the second, Pangburn countered with one run despite not recording a hit. Zahn Crider was hit by a pitch and stole second then Ty Galyan drew a 4-pitch walk and Bailey Whitehead added another walk, loading the sacks.

Adcock, Rose Bud’s starting pitcher, got Myers to pop-out to Martin at first base then he notched a strikeout before Dakota LeBlanc’s RBI walk scored Crider. With the bases still loaded, Adcock evaded further trouble by getting Austin Smith to line-out back to the mound.

Rose Bud tacked on three more runs in the top of the second as Wyatt Way reached on an error, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. Adcock worked a free pass and swiped second before Moore’s RBI groundout to Crider at shortstop scored Way, giving the Raptors a 6-1 advantage.

After Holeyfield recorded a strikeout, Adcock scored on a wild pitch then Matthews drew a walk and stole second before Farren looped an RBI single to right field that scored Matthews, giving Rose Bud an 8-1 lead.

Martin took one for the team to keep the Raptors’ inning alive but Holeyfield got Farrell to pop-out to Myers at catcher.

Pangburn battled back with two runs on two hits in the bottom of the second. Frankie Burleson sharply grounded out to Farrell at shortstop for a quick out but Betts drew a walk and stole second before Crider lifted an RBI single to right center that scored Betts.

Crider stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch before Galyan stroked an RBI triple past a lunging Farren in center field as Crider came around to score, leaving Pangburn with an 8-3 deficit.

Adcock got out of the jam with a pickoff and strikeout.

Holeyfield retired the Raptors in order in the top of the third as Charqueno flied out to Smith in center then Baker popped out to Burleson at second before Way bounced out to Crider at shortstop.

Weatherly relieved Adcock to start the bottom of the third and got Myers and Holeyfield to groundout to Farrell at shortstop before Pangburn got a two-out rally started.

LeBlanc worked a walk then Smith drilled an in-the-park homerun to deep center field that scored LeBlanc, pulling Pangburn within three at 8-5.

Burleson followed with an infield single up the middle and he swiped second before Weatherly got out of the frame when Betts chopped out to Farrell at shortstop.

In the top of the fourth, Rose Bud blew the game wide open with 11 runs on eight hits. Facing Crider, who relieved Holeyfield to start the inning, Adcock reached on an error and stole second before Moore worked a full-count walk.

Weatherly walked to load the bases for Matthews, who picked up an RBI on a fielder’s choice groundout to shortstop that scored Adcock. Farren followed with an RBI single to center field that plated Weatherly as Matthews and Farren moved into scoring position on the throw home.

Leading 10-5, Martin was hit by a pitch before Farrell nailed a 2 RBI single past third that scored Matthews and Farren, extending Rose Bud’s lead to 12-5.

After Martin and Farrell pulled off a double steal, Charqueno belted a 2 RBI single to left field that scored both runners as the Raptors’ lead grew to 14-5.

Baker ripped a double that glanced off one of the field umpires into left field then pinch-hitter Sam McGrand was plunked, loading the bases. Adcock lifted a 2 RBI double down the right field line that scored Charqueno and Baker, causing Pangburn to relieve Crider with Galyan. Moore’s RBI groundout back to Galyan scored McGrand then Weatherly launched a two-run, in-the-park homerun to the alley in deep left center as Adcock also came around to score, giving Rose Bud a 19-5 lead.

After Matthews walked, Farren ripped a double to right center but Pangburn cut down Mathews at the plate with a smooth relay play that ended the top half.

With Pangburn needing five runs to extend the game another inning, Rose Bud slammed the door with Matthews, who relieved Weatherly to start the bottom of the fourth.

Crider led off with a single to right field and he swiped second but Matthews picked him off second on a trick play where the defense faked a bunt charge and dropped back to surprise the base runner.

After pulling off the trick play, Matthews used a nasty curveball to strikeout the next batter but pinch-hitter Tom Hensley kept Pangburn alive with a walk.

Myers worked a full-count walk and both runners moved into scoring position on a wild pitch before Matthews got Holeyfield to line-out to Adcock at shortstop as Rose Bud celebrated the district championship.

Farren led Rose Bud’s offensive attack, finishing 4-for-4 with 3 RBI while Adcock was 2-for-3 with 2 RBI, Charqueno was 2-for-3 with 3 RBI, Matthews was 1-for-2 with 3 RBI and Weatherly finished 1-for-2 with 2 RBI.

The Raptors are traveling to Liberty, Missouri, which is 10 miles outside Kansas City, for the World Series that starts on July 16. On July 12, Rose Bud’s players will be waiting tables at the Quitman Catfish Barn in order to raise money for their trip.
