The 24th Annual World Championship Cardboard Boat Race will be held Saturday, July 31, beginning at 10 a.m. at Sandy Beach in Heber Springs. Boat registration begins at 8 a.m.
Contestants of all ages will race their boats, made entirely of cardboard, over a 500-foot course. Imagine That is the theme this year, which means let your creative juices flow when designing your boat and costumes! The Captain’s Award will be given to the most creative team and boat.
Duct Tape is allowed on the seams, and yes, a one-part glue solution can be used to help hold the boat together. Paint your boat with an amazing design, just so it is a solution that does not harm the environment.
Yes, they can (well, many of them can) float. Some are engineering marvels, which can compete for the coveted Pride of the Fleet Award. For those that don’t float, we do give the Titanic Award for the best and most dramatic sinking.
The boats will be in all shapes and sizes. There will be both youth and adult divisions with three categories in each division: one and two person; team category consisting of three or more team members; and the mechanical division – boats still must be made of cardboard, but a mechanical devise such as bicycle style pedals can be used to propel them.
Racing will take place in heats, and the winners of the heats will then race against one another until a winner is proclaimed. Trophies will be given away for the top three finishers in each division.
Even if you don’t make a boat, come on to the lake for a great day of family fun! Visit the teams and admire their boats while they are on shore, then cheer on your favorite as they race! Enter our Watermelon Eating Contest beginning at 11 a.m. Flex your muscles by joining a Tug of War team! For the little ones, there is a Treasure Dig and other children’s activities. Finally, for the beach set, there will be a 6-person Volleyball Tournament beginning at 10 a.m. At the end of the boat racing competition, those remaining boats still floating will have an opportunity to vie for the Demolition Derby Award.
