Concord sophomore point guard Jacob Roark poured in a game-high 41 points and three teammates reached double figures as the Pirates scalded the nets in a 96-80 victory over county rival West Side on Thursday night in 1A-2 South conference action in Concord.
In front of a packed house, the Class 1A No. 3 ranked Pirates improved to 27-3 overall and 12-0 in league play. Concord held a 25-22 lead after the first quarter, which grew to 57-37 at halftime and 81-57 by the end of the third quarter.
With the crowd in a frenzy both teams started hot as power forward Ethan Hebert opened the scoring with a putback before West Side center Ben Hargrove turned an offensive rebound into a pair of free throws.
Hebert scored again, this time off an assist from Roark but West Side would score six in a row for a brief lead, including two buckets from guard Logan Bailey. Trailing 8-4, Concord guard Casey Turney buried a three-pointer from right wing and forward Ryan Cornelison slashed right baseline for a layup.
The Eagles, who now have three losses in conference play, reclaimed the lead with a three-pointer from right elbow by Bailey but Roark quickly responded with a trey then the scintillating sophomore swiped a steal and drilled a pull up three-pointer from right wing, giving the Pirates a 15-11 lead.
Both teams exchanged baskets until Roark popped another trey, this time from the top of key but West Side hung around with the help of Bailey, who dropped a floater then attacked the basket for a layup, trimming the Eagles’ deficit to 20-19.
West Side claimed the lead for the final time when Hargrove scored off an inbound play but Concord guard Luke Cornett drained a three-pointer from left wing. Following a free throw from West Side guard Bryce Hipp, Roark sliced down left side of the lane and finished with his left hand, boosting the Pirates’ lead to 25-22 after one quarter of play.
Concord continued its amazing offensive display in the second quarter while the Eagles cooled down as the Pirates used their fast pace to wear down West Side.
Hebert converted an old-fashioned three-point play following an offensive rebound but West Side guard Taylor Long drove right side of lane for a layup. After Bailey matched Roark’s free throws with a driving basket, Concord took control with a 9-0 run, sparked by Ryan Cornelison, who split a pair of Eagle defenders while attacking the basket for a layup.
Turney added a three-pointer out front and Roark sank a pull up jumper beyond the foul line before Hebert notched a rebound bucket, pushing the Pirates’ lead to 39-26. West Side forward Tanner Galeazzi briefly broke the Pirates’ run with a jumper from left side but Roark fired back with a three-pointer up top off a rebound and assist from Hebert.
Bailey blew past his defender and finished in traffic before Concord ran off eight more unanswered, capped by a four-point play from Roark, who drilled a deep three-pointer from left wing while drawing contact.
In the final minute of the first half, Roark drilled another trey, this time from top of the key and he later added two free throws, giving the Pirates a 57-37 lead at halftime.
West Side chipped away at its deficit, pulling within 16 midway through the third quarter but Concord responded with a 7-0 spurt, jump-started by Roark, who hit a short jumper in a crowded lane. Hebert added two free throws and Turney bombed a three-pointer from right corner off an assist from Roark, extending Concord’s lead to 69-47.
Hipp countered with an off-balance bank shot, plus the foul and he completed the three-point play before Hunter Cornelison scored inside. Ryan Cornelison added a follow shot in transition after a steal by Hunter Cornelison but Hipp answered on a fast-break and Hargrove recorded a putback, leaving the Eagles with a 73-54 deficit.
In the closing minute of the third period, Roark ripped a three-pointer from left wing then Ryan Cornelison picked a steal and scored off a dime from Roark, who added three free throws in the closing seconds of the third stanza, giving Concord a commanding 81-57 lead entering the final eight minutes of play.
On pace to score over 100 points, Concord pulled many of its starters with 6:00 left in the fourth quarter and cruised to victory.
