Heber Springs won its fourth consecutive game on Friday night, gutting Stuttgart 47-17 to stay within one game of first place in the 2-4A conference race as sophomore guard Skylar Johnson led the way with 17 points.
The Lady Ricebirds, who fell to 3-8 in league play, started fast with the aid of two buckets from Ariel Alexander but Heber closed the first quarter with a 7-2 run, ignited by guard Devrie Attendorn, who hit a midrange jumper from left baseline off an assist from post player Magen LaRosa.
Attendorn drove into traffic and finished and Johnson ripped a three-pointer from right corner, giving the Lady Panthers a 7-4 advantage, which was cut to one on a steal and layup by Alexander.
Leading 7-6, Heber dominated the Lady Ricebirds in the second quarter, outscoring the visitors 12-2. Forward Janae long scored inside off a driving assist from Attendorn then LaRosa found Johnson over a double team for two more.
Attendorn swiped a steal, which led to a pair of free throws from Johnson, who moments later popped a three-pointer from top of the key as the Lady Panthers’ lead grew to 16-6. Then, Attendorn picked a steal and finished with a layup in the open floor but Taylea Jackson answered with a bucket for Stuttgart. With 1:44 left in the first half, Attendorn sank a free throw for a 19-8 lead, which held up until intermission.
The Lady Panthers, who improved to 15-7 overall and 8-2 in conference play, started strong in the third quarter as LaRosa scored deep in the paint and Long added a bucket inside off a high-low assist from LaRosa.
Alexander used a spin move to get free for a layup in transition before Heber closed the third period with 11 unanswered, beginning when LaRosa hit a short jumper in traffic. Johnson then poked free a steal and scored in transition off an assist from Long, who added two consecutive fast-break buckets as the Lady Panthers’ lead grew to 31-10.
In the final 2:30 of the third quarter, Heber managed the only basket when Attendorn drained a three-pointer up top off an assist from LaRosa, boosting the Lady Panthers’ lead to 34-10 entering the fourth quarter.
Heber quickly placed the mercy-rule into effect in the fourth as LaRosa completed an old-fashioned three-point play after grabbing an offensive rebound, then Johnson came up with a steal and layup.
Johnson added a three-pointer from top of the key for a 42-10 lead, meaning the clock would run without stopping for the final seven minutes. During that span, Stuttgart managed to outscore Heber 7-5.
Heber reserve point guard Peyton Vineyard drilled a three-pointer from right wing and reserve forward Mary Simmons sank a 17-foot jump shot from right baseline as the Lady Panthers cruised down the stretch.
Alexander scored eight points to pace Stuttgart. Following Johnson’s game-high 17 points, Attendorn added 10, Long followed with eight and LaRosa finished with seven.
