Concord’s Lady Pirates jumped all over county rival West Side on Thursday night, taking a 35-9 halftime lead en route to a 56-24 victory over the Lady Eagles in 1A-2 South conference play in front of a standing room only crowd in Concord.
Concord guard Sydney Harlan, who scored a game-high 18 points, got the Lady Pirates sailing in the first quarter with four points while guard Molly Jefferson buried a three-pointer and power forward Emanda Reeves and point guard Megan Talley each contributed baskets.
Meanwhile, Concord held West Side without a basket in the first quarter and only two baskets the entire first half ¬ both by post player Haley Delk.
The Lady Pirates led 11-5 after the first quarter but Delk opened the second with a basket before Concord crushed West Side with a 24-0 run, sparked by full-court pressure, which frustrated the Lady Eagles, who had a hard time getting a look at the basket.
Jefferson scored to start the Lady Pirates’ onslaught then post player Kayla Richardson added a bucket in transition and Harlan quickly stole the inbound pass and scored. Harlan added a driving layup and Talley turned a steal into a free throw before Jefferson sank a jumper from right side.
Following a pair of free throws from guard Megan Milidonis, Harlan popped a deep three-pointer from left wing and Jefferson ripped a three-pointer up top on the Lady Pirates’ next possession, boosting Concord’s lead to 31-7.
Harlan added a leaner inside right elbow and Milidonis flipped a steal into a free throw before Delk finally ended West Side’s drought with a bucket in the paint. Harlan swiped a steal, which she converted into a free throw as Concord took a commanding 35-9 lead to halftime.
Concord continued to bombard its rival in the third quarter after West Side post player Jenny Bittle scored inside to begin the period. The Lady Pirates scored eight in a row starting when Richardson hit a turnaround jumper from right side in front of Concord’s lively student section.
Talley followed with a jump shot out front and Reeves scored in the paint before Harlan came up with a steal and scored, giving Concord a 43-11 lead.
Bittle hit a free throw for West Side but Concord fired back with five more as Harlan scored off a back-cut and assist from Jefferson, then Reeves slashed into the lane and scored while drawing contact. Reeves completed the three-point play but Delk scored four straight for the Lady Eagles, leaving them with a 48-16 deficit.
Reeves answered Delk’s second basket with a strong drive then Milidonis came away with a steal and finished with a layup in the open floor. In the closing seconds of the third quarter, Cheyanne Maples buried a three-pointer from right wing as Concord took a 55-16 lead to the final eight minutes of play.
With the clock running non-stop due to the mercy-rule, West Side outscored Concord 8-1 in the fourth quarter to set the final at 56-24. Delk led West Side with 11 points. Following Harlan’s game-high 18 points for Concord, Jefferson added 10 and Reeves finished with nine.
