The second-seeded Nemo Vista Warhawks defeated Concord 52-38 and the third-seeded Shirley Blue Devils rolled past Quitman 77-50 on Saturday in the first round of the Greers Ferry Lake Classic at Mount Vernon-Enola.

Nemo Vista 52, Concord 38
Nemo Vista forward Ty Virden scored 16 points and forward John Baugh, who scored eight points in the first quarter as the Red Hawks jumped out to a 17-5 lead, finished with 15 points.

Guard Nick Cody, who ripped a three-pointer in the first quarter and two more in the third, had nine points. Guard Justin Brown chipped in five, while forward Isaih Criswell and combo guard Seth Long each had four points.

Trailing 27-15 at halftime, Concord rallied behind three consecutive three-pointers, starting when guard Colton Billington buried a shot from beyond the arc.

TJ Richardson, who handled the ball at the point most of the game, added a three-pointer up top and Billington bombed a deep triple from right wing, suddenly cutting Nemo Vista’s lead to 29-24 with over six minutes to play in the third quarter.

The Pirates hung around with two tough shots by Richardson, including a leaner in traffic. Virden answered with a smooth up and under scoop shot from left side, sparking an 8-1 run to close the third quarter.

Brown followed with a jumper from left wing, Virden added a free throw and Nick Cody popped a three-pointer from left wing to give the Red Hawks a 42-29 lead heading into the final eight minutes of play.

Baugh drained back to back three-pointers in the fourth quarter to help Nemo Vista cruise down the stretch. The Red Hawks (10-8) faced Shirley in Monday’s semifinal round.

Richardson scored a game-high 22 points while making three shots from beyond the arc for Concord (9-10). Billington added nine points for the Pirates and power forward Trey Adams had three, while power forward Riley Brock and guard Mason McDonald each scored two points.

Shirley 77, Quitman 50
After trailing early, the Blue Devils closed the first quarter with a 14-0 run and picked up where they left off in the second period, scoring nine more consecutive points to take a commanding 32-13.

Behind a balanced scoring effort, Shirley outscored Quitman 23-4 in the second quarter to push its lead to 46-17 at halftime.

The Blue Devils, who scored 23 points in each of the first three quarters, cruised to victory with the clock running continuously over the final eight minutes.

Forward Jed Privitt paced Shirley with a game-high 18 points and versatile forward Austin Smith added 16 while sinking three shots from beyond the arc.

Guard Easton Freeman made four three-pointers while recording 14 points, post player Seth Linn finished with nine, guard Sam Spurlin chipped in six and guard Joseph Owen contributed four points in the fourth quarter for the Blue Devils, who advanced to play Nemo Vista in Monday’s semifinal round.
