Hello and welcome aboard!! This weekly column is dedicated to travelers and dreamers in search of adventure. Today’s unforgettable vacation features Nassau and Paradise Island in the Bahamas. Located on the island of New Providence, Nassau is the capital of the Bahamas. You'll find the islands' best sightseeing and historic buildings there. Numerous tourist sites are in Nassau proper and on Paradise Island. Slow your pace as you explore Nassau's rich history, tranquil beaches and turquoise waters, one of the best commodities of the Bahamas.
For memorable meals try the Graycliff for the old mansion's architecture, or homemade pasta and filet mignon at Cafe Matisse. Twin Brothers Seafood and Steakhouse, or Frankie Gone Bananas are two standouts, and there’s always the fresh catch at The Poop Deck near the marina.
Kids enjoy swimming with the dolphins at Dolphin Encounters on Blue Lagoon Island. Other favorites include the flamingo show at Ardastra Gardens, and Atlantis Resort's Aquaventure Water Park. Consider exploring Nassau’s history as a port and pirate hangout. And choose from snorkeling trips, or shark diving, sea lion encounters and glass-bottomed boat tours. There are also food and art tours, horseback riding on the beach, parasailing, powerboat rides, golfing, casinos, and of course, deep sea fishing.
You’ll find plenty of night life as well, and don’t forget about the shopping! Some of the best shopping on Nassau is actually across the bridge on Paradise Island. There are two main shopping hubs. The Crystal Court Shops, located inside the Atlantis resort, and The Marina Village, which is lined with visiting yachts from around the world. For vacationers who are “all about the beach”, try Cabbage Beach on Paradise Island, Junkanoo Beach or Western Esplanade just west of downtown, and Goodman's Bay near Cable Beach.
The weather can’t be beat in the Bahamas, as the sun shines 358 days a year! Summer days average 80 to 90 degrees, and winters are fairly mild, running about 10 degrees warmer than nearby Florida. Casual, summer-weight clothing should be worn, along with comfortable walking shoes. It’s time to turn your bucket list into reality. Your getaway in the Bahamas is waiting!
