Hello and welcome aboard!!  This column is dedicated to travelers and dreamers in search of adventure.  Today’s unforgettable vacation takes us to beautiful Barcelona on the Mediterranean Sea.  Colonized by the Ancient Greeks, Barcelona was originally founded during the middle ages as a Roman city.  With its rich cultural heritage, it is one of today’s major tourist destinations and the most visited city in Spain.

The architecture of the historic cathedrals, museums, and galleries is like none other.  Barcelona has several miles of beachfront boardwalks, with its busiest beaches located along the west.  The parks, the aquarium, the La Boqueria Market, and the Maremagnum Mall are favorite attractions.  You’ll find plenty of trendy shops and outdoor bars to sit and catch your breath for a bit.

Barcelona’s harbor front is known for some of the world’s best sun seeking and on the sea adventures. Lounge along the shore, kayak the deep blue waters, or charter a fishing trip for the chance to reel in tuna, swordfish or Mediterranean spearfish.  Take in one of the food tours for savory meals of pasta, fish, or the popular noodle bars.  Breads, rice, and croquettes are always among the favorites, as well as a variety of rich desserts.  Free walking tours are available as a great way to learn more about this magnificent city.

Barcelona’s spectacular countryside and balmy beaches are irresistible.  From sculptures and fountains, to fast trains and fiesta dancers, the vibrant spirit of this city will stay with you for a long, long time.   The best months to visit are May and June while temperatures are in the 70’s.  Summers can be a bit humid, but the fall season again returns to a comfortable 70-ish.  Current passports are required for entry into Spain, of course, and must be valid for six months beyond your departure date.

For those arriving by air, just keep in mind it’s roughly a fifteen hour flight to Barcelona, and their time schedule is six hours ahead of ours.  Mediterranean cruises can be wonderful alternatives and are custom designed for any time frame and budget.
