Oppie Lee (O.L.) Payton passed away February 26, 2018

“Good mornin’; it’s a fine mornin’ this morning. If it’s as fine a mornin’ in the mornin’ as it is this mornin’, it’ll be a fine mornin’ in the mornin’, won’t it?”

Oppie Lee (O.L.) Payton, 85, entered into rest peacefully on Monday, February 26, 2018, from his family’s homestead in Wilburn, AR. He believed every morning was a fine morning and was sure to put a smile on everyone’s face as he spread the joy of our Lord to those around him.

He was born December 5, 1932, in Tyler, AR, the son of Ollie and Susie Payton. He had four younger sisters who believed he could take care of any problem that came their way. So much so, that when the Korean War began, his nine year old sister, Wandavee, told everyone she met that the war would soon end because her brother had joined the Navy, and he’d take care of it.

He married his wife Mildred (Myers) Payton of Cumberland, MD, on February 14, 1961. His passion for cars led him to open O.L. Payton Automotive in Heber Springs, and later, Central Arkansas Auto Auction in Beebe. He believed in honesty and hard work, and he never owned a car that wasn’t for sale… for the right price! His grandchildren loved to sit beside him on his auction block and go for ice cream runs in the neat cars he’d bring home.  Today, his family and many long-time employees faithfully carry on his legacy in the car business.

O.L. is preceded in death by his parents, Ollie and Susie Payton, his sister Mae Dean Hensley, his sister Ella Faye Teague, and his grandson Luke Payton.

He is survived by his wife Mildred Payton of Wilburn, AR, sister Sylvia Marling and husband Russ of Sebring, FL, sister Wandavee Morphew and husband Robert of Kokomo, IN, son David Payton and wife Debbie of Hampton, VA, daughter Linda Davis of Shreveport, LA, son Mike Payton of Hampton, VA , daughter Wendy Hooten and husband Delane of Pine Snag, AR, daughter Cindy Davis and husband Ricky of Heber Springs, AR, son John Payton and wife Rhonda of Wilburn, AR, 13 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and many other family and friends who will remember him singing, “I’ve got a hot rod Ford, and a two dollar bill, and I know a spot right over the hill…” – Hank Williams.

Viewing will be 6:00 to 8:00 pm, Friday, March 2, 2018. Funeral service will be 10:30 am, Saturday, March 3, 2018. Both will be held at Olmstead’s Funeral Home in Heber Springs with interment to follow at the Payton Family Circle in Wilburn.
