I am saddened because I was told last night that one of our regular columnists (who was writing for The Sun Times long before I came) passed away. Susan Ruland had written a political column for The Sun Times for several years. She asked me several months ago if she could switch to a religious column instead of the political one. I told her that was fine with me, in fact I was thrilled with the idea. I only knew Susan through her column, she is the one columnist I had never met face to face.  I regret that she and I were never able to meet. I extend my sympathies to her family and know she will be greatly missed.

As you are reading this column there are only 10 more days until the election. Many of you may have already voted in early voting. Good for you. If you haven’t voted yet, there is still time. Get out and vote. If you don’t know the issues or the candidates, make a point to find out about them. Then you will have made an informed choice on how to vote. An informed voter is a better voter. Don’t pay attention to commercials, do the research yourself. Find out how candidates voted on the issues that are important to you. Make your decisions from that. You can like someone as a person but that doesn’t mean they would make a good elected official.

Frankly, I will be so glad when it’s all over. Then people can quit posting ugly things on social media. Well, it’s a nice thought. Some people for whatever reason, enjoy being mean and ugly on social media. What many don’t realize, or don’t care about, is the fact that when they act that way they lose respect from everyone who reads them.  Of course bullies like that probably don’t actually care about what people think of them. In true narcissistic behavior they only care about themselves and how good they feel when they are being mean to others. I honestly don’t know how they sleep at night.

Don’t be a social media bully. Spread love and goodwill and not hate.

Until next time...
