Alma clinches Class 5A top honor.
Alma won the Class 5A state weight meet on Saturday at the Charles B. Dyer Arena.
The Airedales lifted a combined 4,790 pounds to defeat Farmington (4,580) and last season’s Class 5A state champion Clarksville (4,480), who shared the title with Wynne.
Greenwood defended its 7A/6A title from last year picking up the win. The Bulldogs were also the overall winner with a total lift of 5,095. Booneville won the Class 4A (4,980) and Junction City took first in the Class 3A (4,830). Rison placed first in the Class 2A (4,740).
Last season the Bulldogs lifted a combined 5,140 pounds among 10 weight classes in two events.
Individually, a pair of Crawford County athletes placed among the Top 3 of all those who lifted. Mountainburg’s Shane Rye was second in the 181 weight class with a lift of 570. Truman’s Cade Gartman (Truman) won the division (600).
Cedarville’s Bryson Love nabbed third in the 165 weight class (535). Hoxie’s Colton Robins won the division (600). The Pirates had a combined lift of 4,020.
Greenwood sophomore Jon Womack, competing in the heavy weight class, had the heaviest combined lift of 770 pounds. El Dorado’s Denzel Walter lifted 730, also in the heavy weight class.
The event was hosted by Alma for the third consecutive season.
