The Quitman Lady Bulldogs and Bulldogs pulled the broom out Monday night in the First Annual Fast Break Classic held at Bulldog Complex, a four-day event that consists of teams speeding up the tempo while playing with a 30-second shot clock.

The Lady Bulldogs (5-3) dominated from start to finish against the Class 4A Monticello Lady Billies (0-3) in the team’s 74-54 victory, as junior Gracie Smith led all scorers with 15, getting help from senior All-Stater Nicki Hooten’s 14, cousin and freshman Taylor Jo Hooten’s 13 and junior Lucy Holland’s 12.

The Bulldogs moved to 6-2 overall following their 63-43 drubbing of Dewitt (1-3), with a quartet of double-figure scorers contributing to the home team’s cause, as senior Isaac Clemmons (14), junior Ethan Brantley (13), junior Zac Shue (12) and senior David Alvarez (11) accounted for 50 of Quitman’s 63 points.

Both Quitman teams were back out on the floor for more Fast Break Classic action Wednesday, as the defending Class 2A state runner-up Lady Bulldogs hosted defending Class 1A state champion Wonderview, falling 56-47, while the Bulldogs faced off against the Midland Mustangs, winning 80-45.

Lady Daredevil senior Bailey Wright rang up seven three-pointers to finish with 24 points while classmate Faith Byers chipped in with 14 for the winners. Nicki Hooten controlled the reins for the Lady Bulldog offense, clocking out with 18.

Shue totaled 22 for the Bulldogs, as Brandon Blankenship scored 13 and Clemmons concluded with 12.

Both squads will also play tomorrow, with the Lady Bulldogs playing Nettleton and the Bulldogs playing White Hall.

The Rose Bud Ramblers were also participants in the shot clock festivities, edging out Quest Academy 49-46 for their first victory of the season. Ian Bomar rang up 17 points while Dugan Jones had 11 and Stetson Nix had 10. Both Rose Bud teams returned to Cleburne County last night to take on Dewitt.

West Side’s senior teams battled the Pulaski County Home School Flames Wednesday night, as the Lady Eagles improved to a Class 1A best 11-0 after drilling the Lady Flames 71-21 and the Eagles moved to 6-5 after squeaking past the Flames 55-53.

Sophomore Haley Gentry and junior Madison Bailey teamed up for 18 points apiece to guide the Lady Eagles, also getting 12 points from junior Alex Southerland, 11 from senior Kaitlin Towell and 9 from freshman Sarah Carlton.

Freshman Travis Gentry put together one of his best games of the still young season, coming through with a season high 33 points for the victorious Eagles.

The West Side teams will suit up once more tomorrow afternoon when the Lady Eagles take on the Lady Ramblers and the Eagles meet up with Quest Academy.
