The 2019 1A-5 Jr. High District Tournament kicked off this past Saturday at Rural Special High School, as one area team advanced to the next round and two area squads saw their campaigns come to a close.
The Concord Jr. Lady Pirates took the floor first against the Timbo Lady Tigers, falling just short with a 25-24 loss. Concord led 5-3 after one quarter of play and 12-11 at the half, widening their lead to 24-13 before Timbo went on a final 12-0 run over the last six minutes to steal the victory. Freshman Abbi Duke finished with 9 for the Lady Pirates.
Next, the Jr. Eagles of West Side held off Sacred Heart 27-23 behind a second half charge that saw the home team outscore the Jr. Rebels 15-5 after the visitors led 20-12 at intermission. Zack Birmingham tallied 15 in the victory, 11 of which came in the third session of action.
The Sacred Heart Jr. Lady Rebels were winners over the Jr. Lady Eagles by a score of 43-22, leading 10-8, 16-12 and 35-16 at the quarter breaks. Freshman Kortnee Finch clocked out with 11 for the night.
In the other remaining games, Rural Special's junior boys took down Timbo 37-30, followed by Mt. Vernon-Enola's juniors splitting after the girls defeated Wonderview 39-17 before the boys fell to Wonderview 51-38.
The top-seeded Concord Jr. Pirates battled the eight-seeded Rural Special, while the Lady Rebels of Rural Special took on Timbo before Shirley faced off against Guy-Perkins in both girls and boys play. Semifinal matchups will be played tonight, with championship games set to take place tomorrow night. The 1A-5 Sr. High District Tournament is set to tip off this Saturday at Timbo.
