The Heber Springs baseball team claimed its first 4A-4 conference victories of the season with a doubleheader sweep of winless Subiaco Academy on Friday at the Heber Springs Sports Complex.

Heber Springs (4-2, 2-2 in the 4A-A) took the opener 10-0 with senior Nick Chaney going the distance on the mound allowing one hit while striking out 11. In the nightcap,sophomore Connor Bise went the distance allowing a first inning single while finishing the night with 10 strikeouts in a 14-0 victory. Both games were five-inning contests.

In the first game, the Panthers pounded out eight hits as they plated four in the first and six more in the second inning.

Alec Kelley had two hits and scored two runs in three plate appearances while sophomores Connor Bise and Matthew Cook, combined to go 4-for-5 at the plate and score four runs. Bise scored three of those on two hits including a double and a stolen base.

In the nightcap, Heber Springs plated one the second before sending 11 batters to plate in the third and scoring five runs. In the fourth, the Panthers sent 13 batters into the box and scored 8 runs.

Heber Springs recorded 12 hits in the second game led by Chaney going 3-for-4 with a two triples and three runs scored. Catcher Fate Berry was 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored. Garrett Hudspeth was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored while Bise and senior Dalton Hall each scored twice for the Panthers.

Subiaco Academy fell to 0-6 overall and 0-4 in the 4A-4

Heber Springs defeated Dover, 4-0, in 4A-4 play Monday (details of that contest will appear in the Friday edition of the Sun-Times) and will return to conference play on Friday when they host Clarksville beginning at 4 p.m. at the Heber Springs Sports Complex. 

SOFTBALL

The Heber Springs Panther softball team improved to 3-2 on the season with an 11-9 come-from-behind non-conference victory over Conway St. Joseph on Friday at the Heber Springs Recreational Complex.

St. Joseph (0-6) plated three runs in the top of the first to take an early lead on freshman starter Vallie Cantrell.

Heber Springs would tie things up in the bottom of the second as Nicole Rackley and Keeley Cresswell both walked and scored while Paige Hall would second and later score to tie things up at 3-3.

The Bulldogs would plate in the third to take a 4-3 lead before the Panthers scored four times in the bottom of the fourth. Grace Copeland, Hall and Emeli Bish would all single and score, while senior Abbi McBroome would double and later touch home.

St. Joseph would add one in the fifth, before retaking the lead at 9-7.

Copeland and McBroome would lead-off the inning with singles and later score, the latter the game-tying run. Senior Emily Petersen would walk and score the go-ahead run on a McBroome double. McBroome would later cross the plate the for an insurance run for the Panthers.

Heber Springs banged out 16 hits with the 7- and 8-hole hitters, Grace Copeland and Paige Hall, doing most of the damage. Copeland was 3-for-3 with a double and two runs scored, while Hall was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Abbi McBroome pounded out two hits, including a double, and scored twice.

Cantrell went the distance on the mound for the Panthers claiming the win.

Heber Springs returns to 4A-4 action on Friday when the host Clarksville at 4 p.m. at the Heber Springs Sports Complex.
