MT. VERNON — The Concord Pirates and Quitman varsity basketball teams played for a championship trophy in the first annual Mt. Vernon-Enola Holiday Classic on Monday, taking on the tournament following the disbandment of the Greers Ferry Lake Classic.

The Pirates’ journey to the ship began with a 65-22 walloping of Johnson County Westside, as senior forward Hunter Spinks led all scorers with 20 points followed by junior forward Braxton Cousins with 19. In the semifinal round, Concord (15-2) stayed hot with their fifteenth victory in their last sixteen games by taking down Nemo Vista 60-35 behind 20 points from Cousins, who got help from Spinks’ 13 and senior Dylan Helms’ 12.

The Bulldogs of Quitman set up a date with the Pirates with victories over Midland (70-55) and the host Warhawks (79-78). In the triumph over the Mustangs, senior Ethan Brantley led the charge with 21 points as classmate Zac Shue followed with 17 and Jordan Mauldin added 15.

Mauldin would rise to the occasion and knock down the game-winning 3 pointer right before the final horn sounded to send Quitman (12-3) to the finals, being paced by Shue’s 34 points, 21 of which came in the third quarter alone.

Senior Collin Parsons chipped on 14, as the Warhawks (13-4) were led by junior Wesley Booker’s 28.

The Lady Bulldogs (11-2) linked up with the host Lady Warhawks in the girls title game, ousting Midland by a 65-26 tally before getting past the Lady Pirates of Concord 53-39.

Senior Lucy Holland pumped in 18 points for the first round victors, while Holland rang up 15 in the semifinals, getting double-figure contributions from senior Carson Rackley (13) and sophomore Taylor Hooten (10).

The Lady Pirates (14-3) got 18 points from senior Annalise Cornett and 13 from classmate Ashlyn Deckard, who were 54-20 winners over Johnson County Westside.
